Pet Insurance
Peaches asked:

There are so many to choose from and I haven’t a clue which one to go for! What kind of things should I be looking for in the pet insurance? Thanks!
I’m in the UK.

If in UK we use Pet Plan…have found them to be very good…they pay promptly and there are various plans to choose from….like most insurance it goes up as the pet gets older….you can reduce the premium by agreeing to pay an excess….but you are doing the right thing by getting insurance.

you don’t say where you are USA? UK?

Anyhow, be sure to make sure the pet insurance doesn’t just cover preventative care but also emergency care, which is what most people use. Most don’t and so when you have an injured pet they won’t provide any help. Be sure to ask what the policy covers and look for a company who has also been around for many years. Some pet insurance companies just vaporize overnight as fast as they’ve showed up.

Also be sure to read the fine print before signing. Many pet insurance companies require your pet be seen annually for vaccinations, check-ups, etc. or you void your contract.

I use Pet Protect for my chinchillas and they are very reasonable and do dogs and cats. In the past I used Pet Plan for my cats, and found them very efficient with claims.

E&L its really cheap and covers everything and pays very promptly. I was reccomended this company by my vet. I insure my cat with them x

Pet Plan, any of the big supermarkets, direct line and More than are the ones known to pay out.
Many vets will not accept E & L so you have to pay the vet and then claim the money back, if you can.

    What do you need?
Just vets fees? A sum for loss, boarding if you go in hospital?

For a moggy kitten (a pedigree usually comes with 6 weeks insurance) you need cover equal to Pet plan’s basic- and add the extras you think you might need.
I recommend paying the lowest option (just vets fees) and saving the difference. It mounts up and the other fees are not likely to be cost effective against the premium.

I recently changed to a company called Healthy Pets as one of my cats has cystitis which can keep coming back and unlike most insurances will continue cover for any condition forever(!), you get an allowance for each year and as long as you renew they will always pay out up to the allowance limit for each year

I wouldn’t recommend E&L infact I would strongly advise against them.
I used them for a while and they caused me huge embarrassment, taking 6mths to pay out for a claim I made which led to my vet (who I’ve been a customer with for 17yrs without problem until using E&L) threatening me with legal action for the unpaid bill……

Healthy Pets also insure any age of pet too!
